Why is Sound World needed?

Following years of neglect from successive governments, music eduction is gradually disappearing from schools. It is increasingly becoming the preserve of a privileged elite, while those most in need of its social and developmental benefits are missing out.

Yet music can contribute so much to addressing many of the fundamental issues facing disadvantaged young people today.

A wealth of research conducted by academic institutions across the world demonstrates, conclusively, the wide ranging benefits of music education to child development. In particular, research cites benefits to mental well-being and self-confidence as well as improvements in:

  • cognitive ability
  • numeracy & literacy
  • critical thinking
  • creativity
  • communication & leadership
  • social cohesion

We believe that music should play a central role in education and through practical means, such as mentoring schemes, concerts and workshop programmes, we try to make this happen for young people today. But we also campaign and lobby government about this invaluable resource with the aim of improving the longterm status of music within our educational system.
